St. Martin's Island is the only coral island of Bangladesh surrounded by transparent sea. It is a small island of area 8 sq. km and about 9 km south of the tip of Teknaf. There is a small adjoining island on south of St. Martin's that is separated during high tide, known as 'Chera Dwip'.

St. Martin's island locals call it 'Narikel Jinjira' (Coconut Island or Island of Coconuts) also known as 'Daruchini Dwip' is a small island and the southest part of Bangladesh. This is the only coral island of Bangladesh surrounded by transparent blue sea. It is about 9 km south from the southest tip of the mainland of Bangladesh i.e. Teknaf. About 4,000 people living in this 16 km long island with an area of 8 square km.

Tourists can walk around the whole island in a day. Local authorities recently introduced scuba diving and speedboat sailing to attract more tourists, and there are plans to bring more sporting facilities to the island.

Another island called 'Chera Dwip' is located south of the island and connects and disconnects during low tide and high tide. Chera dwip can also be explored by boat.

From 1989 to 2004, non-residential Bangladeshis and foreigners were the only people permitted on the island; however, this has changed now and St. Martin's Island has become a popular tourist spot.

How to Go?

As the only way to reach St. Martin's Island is by water transport; travel to St. Martin's Island have two parts. First one has to travel to Teknaf’s Damdmia, then cruise to the island by boats or ships. Teknaf can be reached by bus from Dhaka, Chittagong & Cox's Bazar. There are five shipping liners run daily trips to the island, including Shahid Sher Niabat, LCT Kutubdia, Eagle, Keari Cruise & Dine, and Keari-Sindbad. All ships and cruises starts journey from Teknaf to St. Martin's around 9AM - 9.30AM and return journey starts from St. Martin at around 3PM - 3.30PM. These ships & cruises are only available from October to April and non-operative on other time of the year due to rough weather. Small fishing boats & speedboats are also available but are unsafe for the journey.

Only transport for island is non-motorarized cycle-van. Roads are made of concrete and the condition is pretty good.
